Aside from proper format and simple story structure... what really makes the difference between the A-list screenwriter and the novice? Maybe it's luck or fate or even entertainment politics and the like... I wonder if maybe it could be something else. Years ago a Hollywood agent told me, "Come back and talk to me when you can tell me who you are on and beyond everyone else." I thought how cool and... I never went back to talk to that agent. Why? Because I had no idea who the hell I was. Now, how on earth can I create characters and a story that stand out when I myself am lost, unable to get in touch with and listen to the most knowing part of myself... my gut. The key to becoming our own A-list screenwriter is to begin today to take the road our gut is guiding us to take with our screenwriting. When we spend the time working on our whole life as an individual, we become better in every other area of our lives. Although this work may not seem to benefit our writing, believe me it does.
