Why Write Spec Screenplays?

Writing an entire screenplay with the hopes of selling it isn't my primary motivation. I read an article years ago that stated, "...The odds of being hit by lightening are greater than the odds of making a living at screenwriting." True or not, it sure left an impact on me. And here it is, 20 plus years later and I am still writing screenplays. Yes, I have had success. Have I sold a screenplay? Yes. Has a screenplay of mine been made into a movie? Yes. I have written over 20 full length feature screenplays and many of them enjoy their special place on a shelf or in a drawer after making their rounds in Hollywood. So, why do I keep writing them? Because I love writing movies, creating unique worlds and environments in which my characters get to live and breath and grow. I have to write. It enriches my soul. Do I make a living at it? No. So what. I am happy.
